About Our Ethiopian Opal Collection

Ethiopian opal is prized for a play-of-colour unmatched by opals from other origins, along with a naturally higher water content that gives each stone a distinctive translucency. Every opal in this collection is hydrophane Welo opal or fire opal, hand-selected by our gemmologists for clarity, colour flash, and stability before being set.

We work in both 925 sterling silver and 9KT–18KT gold, so you can choose an everyday silver hoop or ring, or a fine gold piece for gifting and investment. Every gold setting is BIS hallmarked, and every purchase is backed by our lifetime warranty and buyback/exchange policy.

Alongside tourmaline, opal is a recognised October birthstone, making it a popular gifting choice for autumn birthdays.

A note on opal care: because Ethiopian opals are hydrophane (porous), they can absorb liquids and change appearance temporarily if soaked. We recommend keeping pieces away from prolonged water exposure, lotions, and direct heat, and storing them in a soft pouch away from harder gemstones. See our full jewellery care guide for more tips.

Whether you're looking for a solitaire opal ring, a fire opal pendant, or a full opal jewellery set, each piece here ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ethiopian opal good for everyday jewellery?
Yes, with care. Ethiopian opals rate 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than sapphire or diamond, so they suit rings and pendants worn regularly but should be removed before swimming, cleaning, or heavy manual work.

What's the difference between Ethiopian opal and fire opal?
Ethiopian (Welo) opal typically shows a white or crystal base with play-of-colour flashes, while fire opal is prized for its warm orange-to-red body colour, sometimes without play-of-colour. Both are found in our opal collection.

Are these opals natural or lab-created?
All opals in this collection are natural, untreated stones unless a listing explicitly states otherwise. Each product page notes stone origin and treatment status.

Does Ornate Jewels offer certification for opal jewellery?
Yes. Gold pieces are BIS hallmarked, and jewellery ships with a certificate of authenticity for the gemstone.

What's your return or exchange policy on opal pieces?
All pieces are covered under our lifetime warranty and buyback/exchange programme — see our Returns & Exchanges page for full terms.
