Factory Direct Prices | Hallmarked 925 Silver | Lifetime Warranty
You've seen "hallmarked" on jewellery listings, but what does it actually guarantee — and how do you read the marks? In India, hallmarking is your single best assurance that silver is genuinely the purity it claims. Here's what a BIS hallmark on silver means, what to look for, and why it matters for what you pay.
In short: a BIS hallmark is an official certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards confirming your silver's purity. On sterling silver it accompanies the "925" purity mark. It's the difference between a number someone printed and independent proof that the metal is real.
What is hallmarking?
Hallmarking is third-party certification of precious-metal purity. In India it's run by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), whose mark certifies that a piece contains the amount of silver (or gold) it claims. It exists precisely because you can't tell purity by eye — the hallmark does the vouching for you.
What the marks mean on silver
On hallmarked sterling silver you'll typically find the BIS mark alongside a purity number — 925 for sterling silver (92.5% pure). Silver purity grades are defined by standard (925, 990 and others), with 925 being the standard for fine jewellery because it's durable enough for everyday settings and clasps while staying beautifully bright.
Why hallmarking matters
Three reasons. First, value — you pay for the purity you actually get, not an inflated claim. Second, trust — a plain "925" stamp can be added by anyone, but hallmark certification can't be faked as easily. And third, quality and safety — reputable hallmarked silver is made to standard, typically nickel-free and lead-free, so it's kinder to skin and lasts longer. How to check a piece is genuinely hallmarked
Look for the BIS mark and purity number on the piece itself (often on a clasp, inner band or tag), and confirm the seller states it's BIS-hallmarked in the product details. Pair that with the at-home checks — real silver is non-magnetic and leaves a light tarnish mark on a white cloth. When a brand is transparent about hallmarking and backs pieces with a warranty, you're on safe ground.
